Mia Vita Bettina sandals in Fawn on linen, a comfortable summer sandal edit

Mia Vita Summer Sandals: Comfortable, Stylish and Secretly Supportive

Comfy sandals have a certain look. Mine don't.
Style you'll love, comfort you'll feel.

There is a particular kind of sandal that announces itself before you have even said hello. Thick, beige, a bit clinical, the sort of thing that whispers "sensible" across a room. For years I assumed that was the deal. You could have the sandal that looked good, or the one that got you to the end of the day. Never the same pair.

I do not accept that anymore. I spend my days styling real outfits for real days, and the one thing every summer look needs is a sandal that looks like a fashion choice and wears like a favourite. The trick, it turns out, is comfort you cannot see.

So here is my summer edit. Five sandals I am actually living in, the honest catch with each one, how I wear them from the school gate to a long lunch that somehow becomes dinner, and why they work (that bit is at the bottom for anyone who wants it).

Section 01

My summer edit at a glance

Five pairs, each with a job. They are grouped by the kind of day they suit, not ranked, because the best sandal is the one that matches where you are going.

One honest note before you fall for anything: every sandal here comes in a medium width only, which is exactly why each one has adjustable straps.

Style Heel How it adjusts Best for
Harmony 35mm 3 hook-and-loop straps Busy, walking-heavy days
Bettina 35mm 2 buckles + slingback Goes with everything
Bloom 35mm Adjustable slingback Lunch into dinner
Heron 35mm Adjustable slingback Evenings out
Candice 55mm wedge Adjustable ankle strap When you want height

Section 02

The five pairs, and the catch with each

Harmony: my "no plan, lots of walking" pair

Three soft leather straps, all hook-and-loop, so I can loosen them by lunch and tighten them again without taking the sandal off. It is the only pair in the edit on a cushioned foam sole with a bit of rebound. It is my market, school run and park pair, the one I put on when the day has no plan and a lot of walking. It comes in Tan and a gorgeous Terracotta.

The catch: hook-and-loop reads more weekend than wedding. Perfect with denim, less so with silk.

Bettina: my "goes with everything" pair

Two buckled straps and an adjustable slingback in full-grain leather, on a hard-wearing rubber outsole. Fawn is new this season and it is the most useful neutral I own. It sits under a linen dress, a jean short or tailored pants and makes all three look considered. (If I could only pack one pair for a summer trip, it would be this one.)

The catch: buckles take a few more seconds at the door than a slide. Worth it for the hold.

Bloom: my "long lunch into dinner" pair

Soft pleated straps in a metallic Soft Gold leather, with an adjustable slingback and a grippy rubber outsole. It is the pair that dresses up a plain outfit on its own, which is exactly what you want when lunch turns into dinner and you are not going home to change.

The catch: metallic is a statement. If you want the same shape as an everyday neutral, it also comes in Black.

Heron: my "night out" pair

Slim ladder straps finished with polished stones, an adjustable slingback, and a responsive foam sole. This is the dressiest sandal in the edit and the one that gets the "where are those from?" at dinner. It comes in Soft Gold and Black.

Woman in a black midi wearing Mia Vita Heron sandals on dusk steps

The catch: slim straps hold the foot less firmly than the Harmony's wide ones, so I save it for evenings and shorter walking days.

Candice: my "I want the height" pair

Colour-blocked full-grain leather on a 55mm wedge, with an adjustable ankle strap. A wedge spreads your weight far better than a slim heel, and the Mia Vita footbed is still underneath, so this is the height I actually reach for. It comes in Tan Multi and a very fun Pink Multi.

Woman on a sunny terrace in a maxi skirt and Mia Vita Candice wedges

The catch: about 25mm of heel-to-toe pitch, roughly double the rest of the edit. That puts more pressure on the ball of your foot (the why is further down), so it is my sit-down lunch pair, not my walk-all-day pair.

If you only buy one

Get the Bettina in Fawn. Low heel, three points of adjustment, and it goes with almost everything you own.

How I style them

A good sandal does the quiet work while the outfit takes the credit. The pairings on high rotation for me right now:

Three summer outfits styled with Mia Vita Bettina, Harmony and Bloom sandals
  • The uniform. Bettina with a linen dress, or with jeans and a nice top, for pulled together with zero effort.
  • The busy day. Harmony with wide-leg pants and a tee. All day, all terrain, still cute.
  • The upgrade. Bloom with a slip skirt and a crisp shirt, the outfit that goes from lunch to dinner without a costume change.
  • The evening. Heron with a black midi and gold jewellery. Let the stones do the talking.
  • The holiday. Candice with a bright maxi. The colour-blocking does the hard work here.

The through-line is simple. Let the sandal be comfortable in secret and take the compliment out loud.

Section 04

Why comfortable sandals don't have to look comfortable

Because the comfort in a sandal lives in the parts you never see: the footbed, the cushioning underneath it, and how well the straps hold your foot so your toes are not gripping to keep the sandal on. None of that decides whether the sandal looks like a fashion choice or a first-aid kit.

Podiatry advice backs the instinct. The Australian Podiatry Association's footwear advice asks for a cushioned sole and a shoe held on with laces, straps or buckles, because if your feet have to grip to keep a shoe in place, they end up doing extra work all day.1 Nothing in that list says chunky. Which means the clunk was never doing the work. It was just along for the ride, and this summer we are leaving it at home.

Dee's rule

If it straps on securely and the footbed is doing the work, the look is entirely up to you. So you may as well choose the pretty one.

Section 05

What makes a Mia Vita sandal quietly comfortable

Mia Vita is built on what the brand calls Hidden Comfort, and on these sandals it comes down to three things you can actually check.

  • The footbed. Every pair in this edit sits on the moulded Mia Vita footbed, contoured with built-in arch support and cushioned underfoot. It is the same footbed across the whole edit, which is why I can switch between them without my feet noticing.
  • The adjustment. Each style adjusts in at least two places (buckles, hook-and-loop or a slingback), so the sandal holds your foot rather than your toes holding the sandal.
  • The height. The same podiatry advice suggests keeping heels under 2.5cm, because height pushes pressure onto the ball of the foot.1 Four of the five sandals here sit about 35mm off the ground, but the front lifts too, so the actual heel-to-toe drop is roughly 13mm. That is a gentle tilt, not a heel. The Candice is the exception, which is why it sits in my sit-down pile.

The leathers are soft from the first wear too, which matters more than people think with straps (if you want the full reason, here is why Mia Vita shoes don't need breaking in).

Frequently asked questions

Can summer sandals be comfortable and still look stylish?

Yes. Comfort in a sandal comes from the footbed, the cushioning and the fit, none of which controls how the sandal looks. Mia Vita builds a moulded, cushioned footbed with arch support into fashion-led shapes, so the style leads and the comfort stays out of sight.

Do Mia Vita sandals have arch support?

Yes. Every sandal in this edit has the moulded Mia Vita footbed, which is contoured with built-in arch support and cushioned underfoot. The support sits inside the sandal, so it does not change how the style looks.

Which Mia Vita sandal is best for walking all day?

For a full day on your feet, the Harmony and the Bettina are the strongest picks. Both sit on a heel of around 35mm, both adjust in three places, and the Harmony adds a cushioned foam sole. Save the higher Candice wedge for shorter or sit-down occasions.

Is a wedge sandal comfortable for a long day?

A wedge spreads your weight more evenly than a slim heel, but height still tips more load onto the front of the foot. The Candice has a 55mm wedge with around 25mm of heel-to-toe pitch, roughly double the other sandals in this edit, so it suits a long lunch better than a day of walking.

What sandals go with everything?

A neutral sandal with a low heel is the most versatile choice. The Bettina in Fawn and the Harmony in Tan both sit quietly under linen dresses, jeans and tailored shorts, so they cover most outfits in one pair.
